Fusion Mixes
My favorite kind of party to DJ is a fusion party where I can go back and forth between different genres; especially Hip Hop and Bhangra. The genres match really well and going back and forth is a great way to keep the crowd moving.
At this point, I have probably dj’d close to 50 fusion weddings. I have done American/Indian fusion events, Indian/Chinese, Indian/Korean, Indian/Turkish, Afghani/Iranian, American/Latin, and more than I can’t think of right now. For me, I love it, because It’s a great way to find new music. Sometimes when I don’t have much of a library for a genre, I rely on the client to send over a playlist so I can incorporate it into my mix. I can’t tell you how many interesting/eclectic songs I have found this way.
In the process of finding songs that blend well together I have come across a bunch of dope fusion edits of different songs. Some are Bollywood songs with a trap flare (rolling snares, heavy bass, and long melodies). I have only dropped these at clubs, and though they slap, I couldn’t play this at a wedding… it would be a little too hype.
Then there are these tracks that are more melodic and upbeat. I am definitely dropping at least one of these remixes at a wedding function to test the crowd and see how far I can go into fusion mixes for the night.
Then there are some edits that are deep in the crates. I would probably only play this at a club or a house party where I have at least a couple of music heads in the crowd. They would know the vibe that’s coming when the track drops and would start the dance party if it wasn’t already in motion.
